What is it?
It is a trade association that is trying to promote a more just form of international trade. It promotes sustainable development, offering better commercial conditions and insuring the rights of marginalized producers and workers in the countries of the South hemisphere of the earth.
IFAT, the main centre representing Fair Trade, has a network throughout the world of more than 300 organizations in some 60 countries and IFAT accreditation is only given to those who can meet the following 10 standards:
1) Community and commercial development of small producers
2)A transparent and democratic management structure
3) Up-front financing with a fair commercial return and sufficient time to repay
4) A fair price for the producers
5) No exploitation of child labour
6) Equal working rights for men and women
7) Dignified working conditions
8) Help for marginalized producers
9) Information and awareness-raising
10) Care and concern for the environment
And what can I do?
Do you know that 500 International corporations are responsible for almost the 45% of the world economy? That 2500 million people live on less than 1 $ a day? That 90% of these corporations are situated in the U.S.A, Western Europe and Japan? That 800 million people suffer from hunger and malnutrition?
We can support the efforts, buying in a responsible way in order to create a fairer world , something that has become vitally important for us all. |
